African Games Round-Up: Zimbabwe Cheetahs

Congratulations to the Zimbabwe Cheetahs who won SILVER at the 13th African Games on rugby sevens debut in the competition.

The event, as organised by the African Union in partnership with the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa and the Association of African Sports Confederations took place in Ghana.

Marking a special event, Rugby Sevens made its debut, highlighting the inclusion of the sport on the big stage in a bid to showcase elite African rugby sevens on the big stage.

As the main sportswear supplier of the Cheetahs, we asked the Cheetahs about the relationship between themselves and Scimitar in recent years, here’s what they had to say:

We hope to make our partner, Scimitar proud as we have had an amazing working relationship with them over the last 3 years and again for this year”.

The Cheetahs had overcome a difficult start to the competition on Tuesday the 19th of March as they faced up against a strong Uganda side that went on to receive the gold, beating Zimbabwe 14-0.

After the initial setback, the team kicked on to find some form as they beat Kenya 22-27 before taking on Tunisia the day after.

Cheetahs comfortably dismissed Tunisia as the game ended 36-7, leaving Zimbabwe on a high ahead of the last day of the competition.

It was a mixed bag of results on the final day as the Cheetahs started on the back foot as they were narrowly defeated by Ghana in a 17-21 epic.

The team showed true determination as they approached their penultimate game against Benin in their final push in the competition. The Cheetahs proved to be the clinical team of the two as they comfortably beat Benin 57-0 in a huge confidence booster.

Moving on to their final game of the competition, Zimbabwe came up against Burkina Faso. It was another competent win for the Cheetahs as they imposed themselves to control the game, eventually winning it 19-0.

The final day proved to be important as it ultimately secured the Zimbabwe Cheetahs the silver medal in the competition as they finished behind the home nation Ghana who topped off the results to receive gold.

The Cheetahs achieved their target of coming away with a medal as stated by Zimbabwe legend, Jacques Leitao prior to the game: “We are looking forward to the competition and the pushing towards accomplishing our goal of bringing back a medal from these games”.

Rounding off the competition as a success the Cheetahs can walk away with their heads held high. From everyone at Scimitar, we would like to express our congratulations to the whole team and coaching staff and look forward to what the future holds.
