New Beginnings: The Castle Triathlon Series 2016

The new Castle Triathlon Series is nearly upon us, with the Lough Cutra Event kicking the season off on 29th May.
The grounds provide a suitably stunning backdrop for the opening event for the series; the race weaves within the historic Irish landscape with features dating back as far as 866 A.D. The race is not just great for those competing, but the spectators as well with plenty to explore while the racing is happening – particularly if you’re supporting a Gauntlet competitor!
The enchanting scenery is fantastic – but that’s probably one of the last things on the mind of those competing.
The athletes will start their journey, from 5km to 109km, in the 1,000 acre lake – the largest privately owned lake in Europe. After their plunge, the bike course tracks through the surrounding countryside with two steady climbs on the lap course.
Following T2, the run route hugs the lake allowing you to take in the breath taking views in the final kilometres of the race, taking you through to the finish. Then simply collect your medal and celebrate your achievement, whether it’s your first triathlon or your fiftieth.

Last years results for the Lough Cutra leg of the Castle Triathlon Series posted some of the fastest times for the series from The Gauntlet through to The Widgeon. This could prove to be a fast course being generally flat with a few climbs.
The Castle Tri Series is home to new and pro triathletes alike. Last year The Gauntlet (half Ironman distance) was won by Fran Summers and Darren Jenkins and the Olympic distance by Catherine Jameson and Liam Lloyd.
Going in to the new Castle Triathlon Series with substantial prize funds available to female and male competitors equally, and a considerable number of pro triathletes have signed up to swim, bike and run, the title of Series Winner is up for grabs. Watch this space over the 5 events to see who dominates the season to win the crown.
