On December 10, 2024, Pontypridd Schools’ U16 boys’ rugby team delivered a spectacular performance to clinch victory in the Dewar Shield final at Principality Stadium. Under the inspiring leadership of captain Owen Lewis—son of rugby legend Geraint Lewis—Pontypridd dominated the field against Cardiff Central Schools, overcoming an early challenge to secure a hard-fought 34-28 victory.
Over 40 boys were selected for the Dewar Shield squad this season, with representation from all 7 schools within the Pontypridd District. All squad members have played a massive part, as have all individuals in the background including coaches, S&C, medical and analysis. Winning the Dewar Shield has been testament to everyone’s hard work and dedication, with the support from USW, Coleg y Cymoedd, Pontypridd RFC and our President, Phil Miles, invaluable.

The game kicked off with Cardiff swiftly taking the lead, scoring an early try, which was neatly converted. However, Pontypridd quickly regrouped and adjusted their strategy. Despite initial difficulties with their set-piece, the team capitalised on a series of penalties conceded by Cardiff, which disrupted the flow of their game and allowed Pontypridd to gain momentum.
As the game progressed, Pontypridd’s tactical prowess began to shine. Isaac Manning-Burke, the skilled outside half, made several strategic kicks into the corners, effectively pinning Cardiff back and setting up scoring opportunities for his team. This approach paid dividends as Pontypridd’s forwards, backed by a well-coordinated effort, executed a series of driving lineouts that led to crucial tries.

This win not only adds to Pontypridd Schools’ illustrious rugby history but also marks their seventh Dewar Shield victory, with previous wins in 1983, 1985, 1991, 1992, 1996, and 2018.
