That may have felt like the longest off-season ever, but guess what. It’s back! 🏉
With the 2023/24 rugby season kicking off last weekend across the UK, it’s time for us to round up the performances of Scimitar wearing clubs, featuring the likes of Ebbw Vale, Pontypridd, Barkers Butts, Woodrush, Worcester RFC and Llandovery.
Llandovery roar to victory in pursuit of a title defence.
Kicking off the weekend, Llandovery continued their splendid form from the previous year, triumphing over Carmarthen Quins with a resounding 54-31 victory at Carmarthen Park. Despite a valiant effort from the Quins, who managed to score two late tries, Llandovery stood firm to bring their title-winning from from last year into the 2023/24 season.
Fans, mark your calendars for an electrifying clash as Llandovery prepares to face Merthyr on home turf this Saturday, the 9th of September.
Pontypridd’s dramatic comeback.
At halftime, Pontypridd found themselves trailing, but they roared back into the game, capitalizing on a two-man advantage to secure their first try. The match at Sardis Road kept fans on the edge of their seats as Cardiff RFC, who were runners up to Llandovery in 2022/23, help Pontypridd to a thrilling 19-all draw after 80 intense minutes!
The excitement continues this Saturday as Pontypridd gears up to take on Ebbw Vale at the Ciner Glass Community Stadium. We do love an all-Scimitar derby.
Merthyr edges past Ebbw Vale
A gripping encounter unfolded at the Wern, where Merthyr narrowly beat Ebbw Vale by just seven points. This win propelled Merthyr to a commendable 4th position in the Indigo Premiership standings after the first round of fixtures in the Indigo Premiership. It was a debut for Ebbw Vale’s striking new away kit, designed and developed by yours truly!
Ebbw Vale, although denied victory, found solace in earning a valuable bonus point. As mentioned above, the Steelmen welcome fellow Scimitar club Pontypridd this Saturday as they look to get their season up and running.
Rotherham Titans welcomed centenarians Billingham Rugby Club.
It was a warm afternoon at Clifton Lane as Rotherham Titans flew off the mark scoring their first points of the season in just 3 minutes. Billingham struck back scoring a penalty and try within 6 minutes, putting them ahead. Rotherham however, dug in and produced three tries in quick succession to quickly take the game away from the visiting side.
Rotherham went on to win 52-24 against Billingham, earning them top spot on table after the opening weekend.
Shipston-on-Stour put Worcester RFC to the sword.
Shipston-on-Stour delivered a commanding performance, closing out their match against Worcester RFC with a commanding 52-10 victory. What’s more, the game witnessed the emergence of five talented Colts players who made their debut, gaining invaluable experience. Worcester RFC, on the other hand, will look to bounce back as they make the short trip to face local rivals Malvern this Saturday at 3pm.
Worcester fell to a heavy defeat at Shipston-on-Stour, losing 52-10 on the road against the strong Warwickshire-based side. On a positive note, there were debuts for five Worcester Colts players, as the coaching team looks to give emerging talent invaluable experience at a competitive level. Worcester will look to bounce back this weekend as they make the short trip to face local rivals Malvern at 3pm on Saturday.
Counties 2 Midlands West (East) Showdown
In Counties 2 Midlands West (East), the action was no less intense as Barkers Butts locked horns with Woodrush. The final whistle signaled victory for Barkers Butts, despite Woodrush managing to notch up a total of 12 hard-fought points. Looking ahead,
Woodrush will host the Old Wheatleyans in their next game, while Barkers Butts look forward to a face-off with second-city side Birmingham & Solihull.
So there you have it. An opening weekend which turned out to be a spectacle of talent, determination, and nail-biting excitement.
