Rugby Round-Up: Week 25

Swansea University finished on a high last week after a hard-fought win while Hereford jumped to 6th in the Regional 2 Midlands West after their victory against Stratford Upon Avon.

We start this week’s rugby round-up in the Welsh Premiership as Pontypridd returned to action at Sardis Road as they welcomed Merthyr. Merthyr proved themselves to be a tough opponent as the game went to the final whistle. Ponty, however, clinched the victory as the game ended 25-22 in their favour.

To the North of Sardis Road, Rotherham Titans were in action as they travelled to face a mid-table Hull side. Hull proved to be more than a handful for Rotherham as they punished them, putting their points tally for the day to 29. Despite the Hull performance, Rotherham found a way and they went on to win the game 29-47. Rotherham, now just 5 points off the top will be busy preparing for the weekend’s game against Leeds Tykes as it may prove to be pivotal in who wins the National 2 North.

Elsewhere last week, Hereford made solid ground in their final push for the 2023/24 season with a win over rivals Stratford Upon Avon. Thanks to a 26-31 away win for Hereford they surpassed their opponents to rise to 6th place on the table, just 6 points off 4th with a couple of games remaining.

It was however one to forget for Worcester as they were defeated 29-3 by Newent after a solid first-half performance. Worcester, now in 11th place will look to claim back some points in the remainder of the season to finish on a high.

Over in the Counties 2 Midlands West (East) last week Barkers Butts took on Southam away from home. In a 33-41 victory the Barkers gained valuable points in their defence of the league’s top spot from Veseyans who won elsewhere with only 2 points separating the sides.

Similarly to Worcester, it was a day to forget for Woodrush as Veseyans win came at Woodrush’s cost after a thrashing from the second-place side. Woodrush will now look to push on and return to winning ways as they finish off the season.

In the Counties 2 Surrey, Chipstead continued in their pursuit of 3rd place as they comfortably beat Old Blues 56-5 at home. The win means that Chipstead have moved within one point of 3rd place Old Caterhamians as they were beaten 32-0 elsewhere in a knock to their hopes of a strong finish to the season.

Finally this week we finish on a high as Swansea University rose to the occasion to beat Durham 33-26 at home. Swansea, showed real character as they came from behind to take all of the points in round 18 of the Bucs Super Rugby league.

Now that might be the end of this week’s round-up, but we do have some exciting games coming this weekend with teams in action across the English and Welsh leagues.
