Rugby Round-Up: Week 26

WHAT A WEEK OF RUGBY! 🏉

Rotherham go 2 points off the top of National 2 North as they put a stop to Leeds Tykes’ 29 match unbeaten run, while Barkers Butts secured themselves as the champions of the Midlands Counties 2 West (East) after defeating rivals Veseyans.

We start this week’s rugby round-up in the National 2 North as Rotherham Titans welcomed Leeds Tykes to a full-house, very vocal Clifton Lane in a pivotal fixture in the race for the top spot.

The Titans outscored their rivals five tries to four thanks to braces from Jack Taylor and John Okafor and a single from Harry Dunne, Lloyd Hayes added 7 from the tee to finish the game 32-26 in the Titan’s favour.

The victory may prove to be decisive as we approach the final three fixtures of the season with only two points separating the Titans from the top of the table. Despite the win, Rotherham still have all of the work to do and mustn’t take their eye off the ball just yet…

Meanwhile, Pontypridd had a game to remember as they welcomed Aberavon to Sardis Road. After opening the scoring, Aberavon got ahead after just 7 minutes. Ponty found themselves 6-13 down as they reached the half-way point.

Fortunately for Ponty, it wasn’t to remain like that for long, Ponty found a way thanks to second-half tries from Niko Matawalu, Josh Phillips, Ryan Wilkins, and Ben Stephens to flip the game and lead Aberavon 30-16 and claim a bonus point victory.

Elsewhere in the Welsh Premiership, Ebbw Vale were narrowly beaten by a strong Newport side who now sit level on points with league leaders and reigning champions Llandovery, albeit having played one more game.

Despite tallying a total of 25 points it just wasn’t enough for Ebbw Vale as Newport pushed on to finish the game 25-31 with just six points in it in the end. The result means that Ebbw Vale remain in third place with Cardiff RFC eight points behind.

It was a mixed bag in the Regional 2 Midlands West as Hereford and Worcester both welcomed opponents to their home grounds last week. Hereford secured more points in their bid to finish 5th after an assured performance against Shipston on Stour that finished 35-29 in Hereford’s favour.

On the other hand, it was a day to forget for Worcester as they were beaten 29-45 by a strong Stratford-Upon Avon team. Worcester, currently on just 14 points, will look to finish the season off strongly as they approach their final game of the 2023/24 season in the Regional 2 Midlands league.

Over in the Counties 2 Midlands West (East) last week, Barkers Butts saw off fierce competition from rivals Veseyans to crown themselves this year’s league champions. Before the game, Veseyans sat only 2 points off Barkers Butts making it a pivotal game in the race for the top spot. With everything on the line, Barkers dug deep as they battled until the final whistle with the game ending 28-19 to secure the top spot for the 2023/24 season.

Elsewhere in the league, Woodrush failed to play last week as Coventrians were awarded an HWO. The result means that Woodrush will remain in 11th place on 19 points ahead of their final game in the Counties 2 Midlands West (East).

Finally this week we head over to Chipstead as they faced Old Caterhamians away from home. Chipstead missed an opportunity to put pressure on Old Caterhamians as they were narrowly beaten 14-9. Chipstead will now look for some good fortune heading into the final game of the season as they will look to surpass 3rd place Old Caterhamians at the final hurdle.

Now that might be the end of this week’s round-up, but we do have some exciting games coming this weekend with teams in action across the English and Welsh leagues.
