Rugby Round-Up: Week 27

This week we take a look back at some of the rugby action that took place over the Easter bank holiday weekend, with all of the Scimitar sides in the Indigo Group Welsh Premiership in action.

We start this week by travelling over to Carmarthen Park, as Pontypridd RFC were in a desperate search of more points on the road to continue their playoff hunt. Ponty held their own for the most part of the game, outscoring the Quins by three tries to one.

Despite outscoring the opposition, Ponty were narrowly defeated as Carmarthen Quins were awarded a late penalty to put them ahead and finish the game 22-20. This agonising defeat sees Ponty remain in 5th place, as Pontypool RFC chase them in 6th.

Elsewhere last week, Ebbw Vale travelled to St Helen’s as they pushed ahead to secure third place on the table with 76 points. For a Swansea side that has struggled for points this season, they demonstrated a respectable performance but unfortunately, it just wasn’t enough for the home side as the game ended 17-24 to Ebbw Vale.

Now in 3rd, Ebbw Vale will look for an assured end to the season as they hope to maintain the gap between themselves and Cardiff RFC in 4th.

Finally, we head over to Newport Stadium as Llandovery travelled to face Newport. Newport proved to be an admirable opponent for the Drovers as they used their home advantage to go ahead. In what can only be described as a huge game in the race to finish top at the end of the regular season to gain home advantage in the playoffs, it was Llandovery that slipped up.

Llandovery fell behind and Newport didn’t budge as they went on to comfortably defeat the Drovers 24-6. Despite the loss, Llandovery are only four points behind Newport with a game in hand as they look to finish the season strongly and get that advantage.

That might well be the end of this week’s round-up as all English-based Scimitar teams took an Easter rest, but we do have some exciting games coming this weekend with teams in action across all the home nations. Stay tuned!
