Rugby Round-Up: Week 28

This week, we saw Llandovery rise to the occasion to win the Welsh Premiership Cup for the third time, Ebbw Vale secure a playoff position with a win against Aberavon and Hereford finishing the season strongly with a win.

We start this week’s rugby round-up at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, where Llandovery and Merthyr battled it out in the Welsh Premiership Cup Final.

The game wasn’t without its issues for Llandovery, as they saw themselves trailing 15-7 at halftime. It was thanks to a big second-half comeback and a late penalty from Ioan Hughes that edged Llandovery past Merthyr to finish the game 20-18 and take the cup back to Carmarthenshire. After a hectic final quarter, the Drover’s hopes of a league and cup double are still very much within sight.

With the Welsh Premiership Cup decided we return to the league as Ebbw Vale welcomed Aberavon to the Ciner Glass Community Stadium.

With securing a playoff berth firmly in mind, the Steelmen knew this was a game they couldn’t throw away and they showed that on the pitch. Ebbw Vale dismissed Aberavon to easily win the game 41-8, with points from Evan Lloyd, Lewis Young, and Ethan Phillips.

Pontypridd weren’t in any league action last week but that’s not to say they weren’t playing as they travelled to face Cardiff University in a late-season friendly. Ponty fielded a team of core, youth, students, and players on permits from neighbouring clubs.

Ponty put on a show after a slow first half to win the game 26-12 as the rain lashed down. With all of Ponty’s subs making an appearance, the team had Toby Thomas, Lloyd Riley, Gavin Parry, Joseph Scrivens, and Llewelyn Brown to thank for their tally for the day.

Over in Regional 2 Midlands West last week, we had both Hereford and Worcester in action. Hereford displayed some fine rugby as they completed their final push of the season, beating Malvern 19-33 to secure a 5th-place finish with 67 points on the board. Hereford are now straight back into it as they head into the Regional 2 North Plate Round 1 against Cheltenham on the 13th of April.

Unfortunately, the same couldn’t be said for Worcester as they were narrowly beaten 27-31 by Shipston on Stour. The loss means that Worcester finished this season in second from bottom with a disappointing point tally of just 15.

Over in Counties 2 Midlands West (East), we were all set for another Scimitar derby with Woodrush scheduled to face Barkers Butts. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be as the game did not go ahead. The travelling team, Barkers Butts, were awarded an AWO to finish off their season as champions while Woodrush finished in 11th on 19 points.

Barkers Butts now head into Round 1 of the Counties 2 Championship as they are set to play Melton Mowbray at home on Saturday the 13th of April. They are just four games away from a date with destiny at Twickenham Stadium!

Finally this week, it’s over to Surrey as the league came to a close for another season for Chipstead, who were travelling to face a Warlingham side that have struggled for points.

Chipstead neatly and quietly put the game to bed, beating Warlingham 14-52. In a dramatic turn of events for Chipstead, it went down to the wire for third place, with Old Caterhamians edging it on points difference. Despite this, the positives outweighed the negatives for a spirited Chipstead side that should be pushing for the top spots in the 2024/25 season.

As regional and county seasons draw to a close, that marks the end of this week’s round-up for now, but we do have some more exciting games coming up soon, including the Welsh Premiership playoffs and the riveting drive for promotion between Rotherham Titans and Leeds Tykes.

Stay tuned, rugby fans! 🏉
