Scimitar Storm is back for 2024

Rugby sevens season is upon us and that means one thing; Scimitar Storm is back to hunt for new silverware!

This year, the team is looking to build on their successes last season by adding more silverware to the collection. We have plenty of new sponsors alongside a couple of new faces joining Scimitar Storm’s coaching staff.

With this in mind, let’s take a closer look at the setup and introduce you to our coaches for the 2024 season.

James Peters

Coming from a fine background of coaching at Loughborough University, James rejoins Storm for another season with us as he looks to build on his success so far.

Having spent time as a Development Coach and more recently as a Performance Coach, James will make sure to bring his qualities to the team and get the most out of each player.

Ahead of the season, we asked James for one of his aims for the season ahead, James said:

“The aim of this summer’s season is to ensure we deliver a high-quality experience for our players whilst being competitive in every tournament we attend”.

While James works hard to prepare the team ahead of their first tournament on the 18th of May at Egg Chaser 7s, we wish him all the best of luck from everyone here at Scimitar!

Warren Abrahams

Storm have added more rugby sevens experience this year, welcoming Warren Abrahams to the fold.

Warren will bring a vast level of experience to the team having previously been a part of the England Men’s Sevens coaching team for four years while fulfilling roles at Harlequins and more recently acting as the assistant coach of the USA’s Women’s Sevens team on a 3-year contract.

With the season looming we asked Warren which tournament he is looking forward to most and why, he added:

“Dubia is one of my favourite tournaments as it holds so many special memories from my days with England 7s. Closely followed by Amsterdam as I had some big wins and ugly loses in the Netherlands”.

We’d like to thank Warren for his commitment to the Storm for the 2024 season and look forward to the utilisation of his experience particularly at the bigger events.

Niko Matawalu

We have another man with vast experience in the professional game next, as Niko Matawalu joins Scimitar Storm’s coaching team ahead of the 2024 season.

Niko, who most recently spent time with Pontypridd RFC in the Welsh Premiership, has 41 international caps for his home country of Fiji, having also spent time with Bath, Glasgow Warriors, and Montauban.

Having hung up his boots, Niko has made commitments in recent years to coaching, specialising in analytics. Ahead of the season, we asked Niko, what he was looking to add to the team, stating that he hopes to “help build good communication and team effort”.

Good luck in your coaching career Niko. Here’s to a strong sevens season with the Storm!

With the coaching staff for the 2024/2025 season announced, it’s time to thank our amazing sponsors for the 2024 season who have helped make Scimitar Storm’s upcoming season possible.

Both the management, team and players are incredibly grateful for the support we have received and hope to repay the faith shown to them with a successful season on the pitch.
