Team Torelli: The 2023 Season

Scimitar is proud to have worked with cycling clubs all over the UK, even more so the chance to partner with a UCI Women’s Continental Team. With the season having now come to a close, we thought it would be a great time to round up the season and dive into the day-to-day management of the team.

In the world of professional UCI Women’s Continental cycling, Team Torelli has undergone a thrilling and successful journey in the most recent season.

We reached out to the Team Principal, Tony Orrell, who reflects on the team’s growth, defining moments, aspirations, and schedule of a typical week both during and in preparation for the cycling season.

Reflecting on the season, we asked Torelli’s chief some questions about his ambitions for the team moving forward. Tony immediately confirmed “We have had our most successful season ever.”

With their second-year riding as a UCI Continental Women’s Professional Team, the team experienced a significant leap in competition. Despite this challenge, the riders admirably rose to the occasion, marking the season as a milestone in the team’s history.

Despite this season’s success, Torelli is certainly a team with big plans. Looking ahead, Tony shared the ambitions of Torelli by stating: “Next year will be another exciting year for the team.” Having established a strong presence in the European Pro Peloton, the team anticipates more invitations to prominent races, including World Tour Races that draw global TV audiences.

Team Torelli is actively recruiting talented riders from various corners of the world to strengthen their roster and enhance their competitive edge. If you feel you could be a part of this team and strengthen the team, get in touch with Tony by clicking here.

A Number of Stand-Out Performances.

Although attributed to everyone, Torelli’s success has also been down to key individual stand-out performances across the season. At the Ford Ride London Classic World Tour Race, Swedish rider Hanna Johansson’s astounding 100-kilometer break on stage 1 earned her the Queen of the Mountains title.

Additionally, young Norwegian sprinter Camilla Ranes Bye’s victory on stage 1 of the Princess Anna Vasa Tour of Poland showcased her prowess by outpacing some of the world’s top sprinters.

But what does a typical week look like for Torelli?

Great results and stand out performances are great to hear about, but we wanted to use this opportunity of speaking with Tony to delve deeper into the team. We asked Tony what a typical week looks like in the world of Torelli. Here’s what he had to say.

During the season, the team was based in Belgium, where their typical week was marked by rigorous training sessions on Flanders’ roads and participation in local Kermis Races.

These short circuit races, approximately 80-90 kilometres in length, provided an exciting experience for both riders and spectators, with frequent sprints and buzzing atmospheres. Weekends were dedicated to high-stakes UCI Pro races broadcasted nationally and on Eurosport.

How about preparing for a new season?

As one season finishes another one starts, with the preparation for the new season being paramount in the build-up.

As the chief of Torelli, Tony Orrell’s week involves extensive administrative work to register the team as a UCI Women’s Continental Professional Team with the National Governing body.

This includes recruiting new riders, securing race invitations, seeking sponsorships, and meticulously planning the logistical aspects of the upcoming season.

Personal highlights for the Directeur Sportif.

Undoubtedly, the thrill of racing stands out as the most cherished aspect of the job for Tony. The strategic battles against opponents and witnessing the growth of young riders throughout the season are immensely gratifying.

However, bidding farewell to these talented riders as they move on to larger teams remains a bittersweet part of the journey.

Team Torelli’s incredible season showcases their determination, growth, and relentless pursuit of excellence in the competitive world of professional cycling. With aspirations set high and a solid foundation, the team eagerly awaits the challenges and victories that the coming seasons will bring.
