UPF Custom Sportswear
Scimitar are delighted to reveal that our custom Qwick-Dri™ apparel feature a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating of 30+.
We’ve had our products tested to ensure conformity to international standards, which means our custom running vests, cycling jerseys and t-shirts (including our recycled options) are now certified with a UPF rating of 30+.
Better still, our custom base layers, leggings, bra tops and arm/leg warmers are certified to a 50+ standard.
What does this mean?
Overexposure to the harmful UV rays from the sun can result in the risk of sunburn and, fundamentally, a heightened risk of developing a skin cancer like melanoma. By applying a UPF treatment to our fabrics, the apparel can act as a form of protection between you and these damaging rays.
In principle, it’s not too different to SPF (Sun Protection Factor), which is used for sun-screen products. However, SPF is limited to a sunscreen’s effectiveness against UVB rays only; due to the fact it’s considered to be more damaging towards skin. UPF, on the other hand, measure’s the effectiveness of a fabric’s protection against both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) light.
According to Skincancer.org, a 30+ rating gives our fabric ‘very good protection’ from the harmful rays of the sun, blocking 29 out of 30 units of UV. These products are therefore suitable to protect during moderate sun exposure.
50+ ratings provide ‘excellent’ protection, blocking 49 out of 50 units and protecting during strong or longer sun exposure, such as marathons or long cycling sportives.

Of course, it’s worth nothing that wearing UV protective garments are just one of a series of precautions you should look to take to keep yourself protected when in high UV exposure. Sun cream and avoiding the sun during peak times is always advised.
